Grand Strand Coffee is a labor of love for the Thomas family. Inspired by their parents’ work in coffee (and wanting to make some money over the summer), siblings Charlton, Keely, and Bella started Grand Strand Coffee as a cold brew stand in 2018, making the rounds at local farmers markets. The family’s coffee story, however, began over 30 years ago! Bettina and Banks Thomas met as baristas at a Gastonia, NC coffee shop in 1999. Coffee has been central to their life ever since. Banks is a coffee trader, traveling the world, building relationships with farmers, and importing the most delicious coffees on the planet. Living in cities across North America, the Thomas family has experienced a coffee culture that brings communities together and improves people’s lives. Charlton, Keely, and Bella have grown up playing in coffee shops, visiting roasteries, and hearing about their dad’s coffee adventures across the map. The family has always wanted to open a coffee shop of their own. When a fan of the kids’ cold brew approached Bettina about opening a permanent Grand Strand Coffee cafe near Market Common, the Thomas family couldn’t pass up the chance. Bettina runs the day to day business of GSC. She mentored the kids as they built their summer business, and they learned together how to build a small business from scratch. Now they’re all pitching in as Bettina leads the way to their first brick-and-mortar location. By visiting coffee farms from across the globe, Banks is able to source the best beans for Grand Strand Coffee as well as offer the best prices possible to the farmers. Good coffee = happy people.
