Hurricane season officially starts June 1, but early predictions are being made. Colorado State University (CSU) is forecasting an “extremely active” season. This is the highest prediction for hurricanes that CSU has ever issued with their April outlook, which dates back to 1995. The forecast predicts 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes, which is a category three or higher (wind speeds 111 mph+). What do your disaster plans look like? On August 8, 2023, Maui’s Lahaina region was overtaken by a devastating fire which was fueled by high winds and dry conditions, resulting in a tragic loss of life and widespread devastation in the historic town. What reportedly began as a wild-land fire, quickly escalated into a catastrophic event, engulfing and nearly completely consuming commercial, residential, and marine properties. More than 2,000 buildings were destroyed, displacing over 12,000 residents and business owners and leaving behind a toxic aftermath that will potentially afflict the health of its residents and land for years to come. Responding swiftly to the crisis, SRP's Critical Response Team, comprised of experienced fire recovery professionals and environmental consultants, mobilized within 24 hours to assist local authorities, private commercial asset owners, and affected property owners in the arduous task of beginning the recovery process. Our commitment to the Maui community is unwavering. With a primary focus on aiding local residents and business owners, our teams initiated aerial surveys using drone technology, including 3D modeling, to meticulously document the extent of the fire's impact. Simultaneously, our structural engineers, certified industrial hygienists, insurance experts, and construction estimators conducted forensic level inspections of affected structures, assessing fire, smoke, soot, and ash damage, testing for hazardous contaminants, and formulating certified remediation plans to guide our clients through the restoration process. The devastation that has befallen Lahaina is profound, and our hearts ache for the losses endured by its residents. Lahaina is not merely a geographic location; it is a community steeped in history, cherished landmarks and memories, and a people with a sacred resilient connection to the land. Witnessing the destruction firsthand, our team shares in the sorrow of locals who have seen their homes, businesses, and landmarks decimated by flames. Yet, even amidst the devastation, we watched them draw strength from the indomitable spirit of Aloha and Ohana, embracing with unity their entire community. As we continue this journey of recovery alongside the people of Maui, Strategic Response Partners remains steadfast in our commitment to providing our expertise, resources and unwavering support. We understand, as we lock arms in a symbol of togetherness, they will rebuild and emerge stronger than ever before.
