MEDIA STATEMENT

In response to the wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, issued the following statement:

"Today brought devastating news that the wildfires we've been contending with throughout the south have reached populated areas in and around eastern Tennessee, damaging or destroying more than 150 homes and businesses. As a resort community, we understand the economic impact that picturesque towns like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have on a region. Our thoughts are with the thousands who have been evacuated as high winds caused the fire to spread so quickly that few were prepared. We're thankful that, according to the Gatlinburg fire chief, the worse is over and that downtown Gatlinburg remains intact. We're also thankful for Gatlinburg Mayor Larry Waters' commitment to the rebuilding and restoration of this historic destination."
