How the Chamber does to help recruit and grow air service in the Myrtle Beach Area

Brad Dean, President and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, on what the Chamber does to help recruit and grow air service in the Myrtle Beach Area:

1. There is an ongoing collaborative effort between the MBACC, the Myrtle Beach International Airport, and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday to grow air service in our area. It is very much a “team sport,” and the collaboration proves to be very successful.

2. There’s an extensive amount of research being done on an ongoing basis to determine where people are flying in from, so we have a full understanding of which markets we are effectively serving. We have also been able to identify which areas travelers are flying from to get to other (competitor) destinations. We know when they’re flying and who is flying. The airport does a lot of their own research which has helped us develop an accurate profile of the air traveler. This helps us identify the potential to grow direct flights in the most strategic markets. We have also begun to research the geographic origin of the passengers who arrive in Myrtle Beach; not just the location of their connecting flight.

3. We execute ongoing targeted advertising campaigns in key markets--not just where we have air service but where we want to have air service--to build brand awareness and develop more brand identity. This pro-active effort delivers messages to markets that don’t yet have air service, so when it is offered, we can benefit from top-of-mind awareness when we do secure service from those markets.

4. We participate in co-operative advertising with the airlines, combining the “come visit Myrtle Beach,” message with a directive to fly with a partner airline.

5. The Chamber participates in an ongoing effort to recruit air lines and meet with them regularly to nurture and maintain good business relationships with them. All three partner organizations also communicate on a regular basis to make sure we are addressing the needs of the airlines.
